Tear secretion test

The tear film on the cornea and bulbar conjunctiva consists of three layers: lipid, aqueous and mucin layer. Disorders in the tear film can cause a feeling of discomfort and red eyes. Our laboratory is equipped with a device called TearLab which provides an objective and qualitative test for diagnosing and prevention of dry eye patients. Results are accurate and ready within seconds using only 50 nanolitres of tear film to diagnose the dry eye condition. TearLab gives the best indication of the earliest stage of the disease.
Deficiency in tear secretion is determined by Schirmer’s test. It is performed in two ways:

  • for total (basal and reflex)
  • for basal (without reflex) with topical anaesthetic
