Safety

The technology used in the iLASIK procedure is very sophisticated (the currently used system has been in use for years) and safe. Doctors have been working with LASIK for a decade. About 32 million LASIK procedures have been performed to date in the world which makes it the most common eye procedure in the USA. In fact, all branches of the US Army and NASA have recently approved the treatment of their officers with LASIK thanks to research they have done on the iLASIK technology. The iLASIK Procedure

The iLASIK procedure takes a few minutes. It changes the shape of the cornea thus correcting the imperfections of your eye (these imperfections are the cause of your short-sightedness, long-sightedness, etc.). Here is what happens:

-

- You go through a detailed examination from your doctor.

- A special computer is used to make an individual blueprint of your eyes; this blueprint is later used to perform the necessary laser correction. (CustomVue see a brochure in English)

- A laser makes a thin flap in your cornea (InterLase see a brochure in English)

a. Special drops will be administered to you so you will not feel anything.

b. This flap enables the surgeon to perform the correction.

- A second laser is used to make the correction to your cornea based on your eye blueprint taken earlier.

a. This correction is completely computer guided.

b. It is safe and entirely painless.

- You can have excellent vision without spectacles or contact lenses.

The iLasik procedure is not without risk but wearing contact lenses is not either. Contacts take time and daily attention so as to keep them clean and avoid infections.
iLASIK is an elective procedure with other alternatives such as spectacles, RPK, standard LASIK and other refractive surgical procedures. Only an ophthalmologist trained in lasers (Dr. Plamen Hubanov) can decide if you are a candidate appropriate for the procedure. As with all surgical procedures there are certain risks. It is important to discuss with you doctor any risks and all questions concerning the procedure.

Dr Hubanov in the “Health” Programme on Bulgarian National Television (29.01.2009)
