It can be congenital or acquired. The congenital cataract is the result of anomalies in the development of the eye lens. It is rarely a hereditary disorder. Most often the congenital cataract is caused by maternal viral diseases, especially in the first trimester of the pregnancy. Children born with a cataract have low vision when the lens is partially opaque and loss of vision if the lens has a complete opacification. Such children should be operated as early as possible in order to have a normal intellectual development in the future. The acquired cataract arises in some systemic diseases (diabetes) or is due to eye injuries, radiation effects. It can appear as a complication of some eye diseases: inflammatory, such as iridocyclitis, uveitis and in some cases myopia. The most common type of cataract is the age-related one. It usually starts to form around the age of 60. Patients complain of decreased vision in one eye, rarely in both eyes. The decrease of vision is gradual and painless. Cataracts can be treated only surgically. After being diagnosed with a cataract, patients should have their vision and eye pressure checked every 3-4 months.

1. The first in Bulgaria modern laser for cataract surgery CATALYS is already adopted in St. Nikolay Chudotvorets Eye Clinic in Varna. This laser system is a revolution in cataract surgery because it allows the surgeon to have an individual approach depending on the anatomical specifics of the patient´s eye. It is a high precision device which works at approximately a tenth of the micron; the eye pressure is not increased, it does not damage the cornea or other structures of the eye. “Laser cataract surgery is a quick, safe and effective procedure that ensures fast recovery and excellent results”, says Dr Plamen Hubanov, manager of the eye clinic.
The method has been acknowledged as the safest approach in the world for cataract patients, the intervention being painless and at half the price of other similar procedures. The laser system builds a 3D map of the eye which is used to prepare the most precise plan for the operation, then the incisions are made and the cataract is broken into pieces. In this way the amount of ultrasound energy is reduced which ensures a fast recovery and less complications after the operation. CATALYS is based on advanced technologies which allow calculating the position of the artificial lens that substitutes the natural one to microns and thus providing excellent eyesight after the operation. The equipment gives opportunity for correction of astigmatism which is necessary for premium toric lenses, accommodative and multifocal lenses.
The CATALYS system has been recognized as one of the top 100 technological innovations in the world. It consists of a state-of-the-art docking system, an integrated 3D full volume optical coherence tomography (OCT).
St. Nikolay Chudotvorets Eye Clinic continues its policy for investing in latest-generation lasers. The eye cannot produce clear images without a lens. During the first stage of the operation the natural lens is broken up by ultrasound or by warmed surgical solution, a procedure safer for the patient, after which the lens is suctioned. The medical term for this process is called phacoemulsification. This modern surgical technique allows for a smaller incision (from 1.8 to 2.6 mm) compared to older techniques (8-10 mm). This method is gentler to the eye and reduces the recovery time. During the second stage of the opeeration the artificial lens is folded and inserted in the eye through the tiny incision. It automatically unfolds in the eye after which is carefully positioned by the surgeon.

6. Contemporary research shows that visible light and especially high energy blue light can be a leading factor for the development of retinal damage such as age-related degenerative changes. This condition is one of the most common reasons for loss of visual acuity.
At the age of 4 the natural lens has gradually developed yellow pigments. This yellowing is increased with age. It should not be confused with lens opacity (cataract). The yellow pigment of the natural lens acts as a protective filter which reduces the blue light penetrating into the eye and thus decreasing the risk of damage to the retina.
In order to prevent such damage the intraocular lenses AcrySof IQ, ReSTOR Aspheric and TORIC possess filtering properties which simulate those of the natural lens. When the natural lens is removed during cataract surgery the eye lacks its natural protective filter and should not be left unprotected to the harmful effect of ultraviolet and blue light. Blue light rays are part of the daylight spectrum but is also emitted by artificial light sources such as halogen and fluorescent lamps, studio spotlights, camera flashes, tanning lamps, electronic devices, etc. AcrySof lenses have been successfully implanted to millions of patients which makes them the most implanted intraocular lenses in the world. Their advantage to traditional lenses is that besides a UV filter they have an additional blue light filter. Thus, they protect the retina from the harmful blue light rays in the same way as the natural lens does.

15. Avoid rubbing the eye or applying any pressure on it for at least one month after the operation.
6. You can take showers and baths or shave as usual but your eye must not be in contact with either shampoo or soap. Take special care when removing your makeup.
7. During the first week following the operation avoid reading longer than recommended.
8. You can watch TV but try not to overstrain your eye.
9.
